Prayers for a healthy pregnancy

Nine months is a long time to hold your breath. These prayers ask for a healthy baby, a safe birth and peace for the parents while they wait. A vigil keeps praying through every week of it.

A Catholic prayer

The hope: “That our baby is born healthy and my wife has a safe delivery.”

First prayer

Lord God, creator of all life, we lift up this growing family to your care. Protect this mother in the hours of her labor. Grant her safe passage through the pain, steady hands for the medical staff, and strength for her body as she brings life into the world. Holy Mary, Mother of God, you knew the fear and wonder of giving birth; wrap this mother in your mantle of protection and pray for her. Watch over this child in the womb. May the baby arrive in good health, breathing strong, welcomed into waiting arms and a loving home. Guard the father's heart against dread, and fill their delivery room with holy peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

A Jewish prayer

The hope: “That this pregnancy holds after two losses.”

First prayer

Ribono shel Olam, Master of the Universe, hear our plea for Leah. You knit us together in the secret place, and You count every tear that falls. Two times Leah has known grief where there should have been life. We ask You now to guard this new life growing within. Let this pregnancy hold. Shield the womb from harm, strengthen Leah's body day by day, and let this child come forth in health and peace at the appointed hour. When fear rises, be a fortress and a shield. Bring calm to the hours of waiting, and turn mourning into dancing. May the One who answered our mothers Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah answer this prayer with life and joy.

Amen

A Sikh prayer

The hope: “That my daughter-in-law and the baby stay healthy until the birth.”

First prayer

Waheguru, Creator of all life, we place this beloved family into your care. A devoted elder asks for your blessing upon their daughter-in-law and the child she carries within her. Shield both mother and baby each day until the time of birth arrives. Give the daughter-in-law physical strength for her body and peace for her thoughts. Watch over the baby's growth in the womb, and let each week bring good health and vitality to both. Ease every worry that visits this household, and fill their home with trust in your will. Keep them in high spirits through all the waiting. We ask that the birth be safe and that joy greet them at the end of this time. Nanak Naam Chardi Kala, Tere Bhane Sarbat Da Bhala.

Waheguru

A Muslim prayer

The hope: “That my wife and our baby are safe through the birth next month.”

First prayer

Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim. All praise belongs to You alone, Lord of all the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions. O Allah, Al-Hafiz, the Preserver, and Ash-Shafi, the Healer, I ask You to protect my wife and our baby through the birth next month. Shield them both from harm, distress, and complication. Ease her labor and grant her body strength when the hour arrives. Bring our child into the world in safety, healthy and whole, and let the delivery be free of fear. Rabbi yassir wa la tu'assir, Rabbi tammim bi khayr, my Lord, make this easy and do not make it difficult, and complete this matter in goodness. Surround us with skilled hands and grant my wife quick healing in the days after. Bless the Prophet Muhammad and grant him peace.

Ameen
